Year 3 Day 33- Kickin’ Suede

Today a kid came up, and shoved his foot on my desk…

“Check it out captain, Kickin’ Suede.”

ok.

This picture is a reflection on something that actually happened yesterday. I have some students that are slow, almost painfully so. This slowness isn’t related to any medical condition either, unless you classify marijuana as “medicine.”

One student in particular is notoriously late, and when he finally shows up, he always says almost the exact thing.

“wha page we on? Wha we doin’?”

I try to quickly get him on the same page as the rest of the class…and then, always he says the next thing…

“Kuh’ I borrow a pencil?”

I get him his pencil, and get on with my lecture…about 1/3 of the way through the lecture,

“What number we on?”

I tell him and he trys to catch up.

Somewhere in the middle of the lecture he’ll mumble something about being “hella tired” and try to fall asleep, or sit there sleeping with his eyes open.

Yesterday during this mid-class daze, in a matter of 2 minutes I watched him write down an answer, put his pencil in his hat, zone out for 30 seconds, realize he needed to write another answer, and search for the next minute for his pencil, which he had just placed in his hat 60 seconds ago. He was looking around, like someone stole it, checking under desks, in his lap, on his neighbors desks, then, discouraged, he just sat there…staring straight ahead.

“why aren’t you writing?” I asked him.

“I tain’ find ma pencil.”

One young lady gestured to him to check in his hat. He did, shrugged, and went on. He didn’t even seem fazed by the fact his short term memory was useless after 60 seconds. He just kept on writing. This same student has argued numerous times with classmates that marijuana doesn’t affect you negatively.

Currently I’m waiting on a Computer projector so I can show slides in class on various topics from my computer. The problem with this is, that A) It’s not even ordered yet, and B) I’ll have to share it with the staff, and I plan on using it at least 3 times a week, or more. I’m having to rearrange what would be exciting lectures in favor of book work, and writing because we don’t have the technology.

In other words, we cannot currently rebuild him. (sorry for the random 6 million dollar man reference)

These minimum days are killing me, I feel like I should have more time, but somehow I end up wasting it. It takes me 3 hours to look for slides for geography online, and I don’t even finish the process, or have the machine to use them with. This accounts for why there was no drawing, or entry for yesterday…I had great intentions, and poor follow through.

Hopefully the rest of this week will be better.
