Daily School Journal Day 139- Please Captain, don’t hurt ’em

by admin on April 12th, 2004

I hate coming back from a long break. It was especially hard considering I thought we had today off. I didn’t find out until about 8 last night that I had to work today. I was positive we had it off. Obviously, I was wrong.

I was going to call in today, because I was so looking forward to another day off. I didn’t, I don’t know why. I cursed myself the whole way to work this morning.

I showed up to work this morning and found a note from the IT department that says I was flooding port 80. I guess they didn’t find any viruses. I still have the idea our IT department really has no clue what they’re doing. I mean the people who hire them have no idea what they’d need or be looking for in a competent IT person, so whoever spits out the most jargon that sounds important, gets the job.

iWow all that wire talk sounds really interesting, you mean virus’s may be infiltrating our servers? WOW, that sounds really bad, and we need ANTI-VIRUS software installed on our servers, and server clients to be rendered safe from virus attacks? and we need periodic updates to the system infra-structure as well? Wow, you MUST know what you’re doing… you’re hired. Now go find out who’s flooding port 80.i

port 80, of course, is the port most http traffic goes through, although other traffic can be routed through it to skirt around blocked ports usually used by other programs (say, aim or p2p)
